Event planners are in high demand as nearly every kind of organization has a need to create and manage events, from corporations to recreational centers and nonprofits to sports teams.
The Event Planning certificate provides undergraduate students with an opportunity to learn about the profession of event planning. It combines experiential learning with academic course work, resulting in students who have the practical skills and knowledge to succeed in this growing industry.
This certificate will potentially fit within any undergraduate major and is open to any student earning a bachelor's degree at Iowa.
This certificate requires the completion of a minimum of 21 semester hours. Course work includes two core courses and at least 12 focused elective hours, chosen from classes offered in sport and recreation management, journalism and mass communication, and marketing.
As a part of their focused educational experience, students complete a three-semester-hour internship at an organization that has significant event-planning needs. To qualify, internships must take place after a student has completed the certificate's two core courses.
Because this is an interdisciplinary and intercollegiate program and some prerequisites apply, it is strongly recommended that students work closely with their adviser in planning course work for this certificate.
Review Event Planning in the UI General Catalog for details on course requirements.
