Geographical and Sustainability Sciences is concerned with understanding how human impacts on the environment and coupled environmental impacts on human activities are connected via complex feedback loops, developing technical skills like GIS and spatial analysis, and applying system thinking to find solutions to today’s grand challenges such as addressing water scarcity or improving energy efficiency. Areas of focus range from health to land use change and urban systems. This unique program fosters a holistic understanding of environmental challenges and empowers students to pursue careers in sustainability and make a positive impact on the world. - Complete the World Language requirement through one of the following pathways. The requirement may be satisfied through high school coursework:
- Fourth level of a single world language
- Third level plus a world language and cultural exploration course
- Second level of two languages
- Complete:
- GEO 121 World Regional Geography
- MAT 157 Statistics
- Complete all requirements for the AA degree.
- When transferring to Iowa, present a cumulative transfer grade-point average (GPA) of at least 2.00 from all colleges attended.
- Complete the UI courses required for this major, as specified in the UI General Catalog.
- Complete at least half of the remaining semester hours needed for your major and degree during each of your two years at Iowa. (A total of 35 semester hours is required for the geoscience major and 120 semester hours for the BA degree.)
- At least 45-48 semester hours of work for the major. Credit required for the major depends on the student’s choice of track.
- Students must maintain a GPA of at least 2.00 in all courses for the major and in all UI courses for the major.
- Transfer students must earn a minimum of 15 semester hours for the major at the University of Iowa.
