Elementary Education Transfer Tips
Students can earn a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Elementary Education.
When to transfer?
Things you may want to consider in deciding when to transfer to Iowa for Elementary Education include:
- For most students, the Elementary Education major requires five semesters to complete. Because of this, you may want to consider transferring to the University of Iowa for your second year of college.
- Students who finish the Associate of Arts (AA) degree have fewer general education requirements to complete at the University of Iowa, so you might decide you want to stay to finish an AA.
- You can start the Elementary Education major before you get admitted to the Teacher Education Program. But, most of the course requirements of the Elementary Education major require admission to the Teacher Education Program (TEP), so you may want to apply to the TEP in your last semester at your current college.
General Education Requirements
The general education requirements to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of Education are the GE CLAS Core of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS), so if you also want to earn a degree from CLAS, the same general education courses will satisfy the requirements of both colleges.
Transfer students with an AA degree from an Iowa or Illinois community college will enter the university having fulfilled all of the General Education CORE Program requirements (except World Language and Understanding Cultural Perspectives) in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The World Languages requirement can be satisfied in high school, community college, or at the university. The Understanding Cultural Perspectives requirement must be completed with coursework taken at the University of Iowa.
Elementary Education Requirements
Search the university's online How do my courses transfer?, or Community College Transfer Guides, to find out if your college has equivalents to any of these Elementary Education major requirements:
- STAT:1010 Statistics and Society; or STAT:1020 Elementary Statistics and Inference
- EPLS:3000 Foundations of Education
- PSQF:1075 Educational Psych & Measurement
- EDTL:4900 Foundations of Special Education
If you plan to complete an added endorsement for an additional area of teaching (for example, Reading), you could check for equivalents to those course requirements.
