Spanish Transfer Tips
Students can earn a BA (Bachelor of Arts) in Spanish.
The Bachelor of Arts with a major in Spanish requires a minimum of 120 semester hours, including at least 30-34 semester hours of work for the major. A maximum of 15 semester hours of approved transfer credit may be counted toward the major.
This major can be sequenced in four semesters if students have completed SPAN:1501 Intermediate Spanish I (or can place at a higher level) prior to transferring. Students may transfer either sophomore or junior year and still complete the major. Students will need a minimum of 3 semesters at UI after completing SPAN:1502 Intermediate Spanish II.
Students should complete as many of these courses as possible prior to transferring the University of Iowa (unless they are a heritage speaker of Spanish whose skills are already at the advanced level and/or can place out these levels):
- SPAN:1001 Elementary Spanish I
- SPAN:1002 Elementary Spanish II
- SPAN:1501 Intermediate Spanish I
- SPAN:1502 Intermediate Spanish II
Transfer students with an AA (Associate of Arts) degree from an Iowa or Illinois community college will enter the university having fulfilled all of the General Education CORE Program requirements (except World Language and Understanding Cultural Perspectives) in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
Use the Online Course Equivalency Guide to determine appropriate transfer course equivalencies.
Prospective Spanish transfer students should contact Meredith Mahy Gall, Meredith-gall@uiowa.edu or 1-319-467-0337 with questions about the major.
