Educational Credit for Training Programs in Non‐military, Non‐collegiate Organizations

A University of Iowa (UI) student may be granted credit for educational experiences in non‐military, non‐collegiate organizations under the following conditions:

  1. Credit may be awarded to a student upon certification of successful course completion by the American Council on Education’s Registry of Credit Recommendations.
  2. Guidelines for this decision are contained in the most recent edition of the National Guide of Educational Credit for Training Purposes published by the American Council on Education (ACE).
  3. Credit for non‐military, non‐collegiate courses transcribed by ACE shall be limited to 15 semester hours. Any credit awarded above‐and‐beyond 15 semester hours would need to be approved by the degree‐granting college to which the applicant is applying for admission.

Educational Experiences in the Armed Services

  1. Formal Military Service School Courses. A student who is a veteran or member of the active armed services or the selected reserves may be granted credit for educational experiences in the armed services under the following conditions:
    1. General credit may be awarded to a student upon the Department of Defense’s certification of the formal military service school courses.
    2. The decision as to the academic area of application and quantity of elective credit to be awarded rests with the UI Director of Admissions.
    3. Guidelines for this decision are contained in the most recent edition of A Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Services, published by the ACE.
  2. Military Occupational Specialty. A student who is a veteran or member of the active armed services or the selected reserves may be granted credit for occupational specialties held in the armed services under the following conditions:
    1. General credit may be awarded to a student upon the Department of Defense’s certification of a Military Occupational Specialty, as defined by the relevant military branch.
    2. The decision as to the academic area of application and quantity of elective credit to be awarded rests with the UI Director of Admissions.
    3. Guidelines for this decision are contained in the most recent edition of A Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Services, published by ACE.
  3. Defense Activity Nontraditional Education Support (DANTES), DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSST), and United States Armed Forces Institute (USAFI). DANTES succeeded USAFI when USAFI was deactivated in May 1974. The USAFI records of students who are veterans or members of the active armed services or the selected reserves will continue to be reviewed, as will the DSST records, provided the student achieved at least the minimum score.
