Geoscience Transfer Tips

Students can earn a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Geoscience.

Geoscience majors who will not complete the equivalent course requirements below by the end of their second year at their community college should transfer to the University of Iowa by the end of their first year. Use the 2 Plus 2 website and the Online Equivalency Guide to determine appropriate transfer course equivalencies.

Meet Admission Requirements for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

  • Geoscience majors who will not complete the checkpoints below by the end of their second year at their community college should transfer to the University of Iowa by the end of their first year.
  • Complete the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences General Education Requirements. Transfer students with an AA degree from an Iowa Community College, or Black Hawk College in Illinois, will enter the University having fulfilled all of the General Education Program requirements (except World Language and Diversity and Inclusion) in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Students who plan to complete their AA degree at an Iowa community college should consider the 2 Plus 2 Guaranteed Graduation Plan
  • Complete the fourth level of a single world language as needed for Iowa's General Education Program.
  • BA and BS students should complete EES:1030 Introduction to Earth Science or EES:1050 Introduction to Geology (preferred).
  • Students should complete the following courses during their first year prior to transferring to the University of Iowa:
    • BS students should complete CHEM:1110 Principles of Chemistry I and CHEM:1120 Principles of Chemistry II.
    • BS students should complete PHYS:1511 College Physics I and PHYS:1512 College Physics II or PHYS:1611 Introductory Physics I and PHYS:1612 Introductory Physics II.
    • BS students should complete MATH:1850 Calculus I and MATH:1860 Calculus II or MATH:1550 Engineering Math I and MATH:1560 Engineering Math II.
    • BA students should complete CHEM:1070 General Chemistry I and CHEM:1080 General Chemistry II or CHEM:1110 Principles of Chemistry I and CHEM:1120 Principles of Chemistry II. 
    • BA Students must complete 10 s.h. in college-level Mathematics, Computer Science, and/or Statistics courses.
