Student Responsibilities

Southwestern Community College checkpoints
- Complete all requirements for the AA degree.
- Take the Spanish placement exam to determine the appropriate first Spanish course for you.
- Complete or place out of the equivalent of 4 semesters of Spanish:
- FLS:141 - Elementary Spanish I
- FLS:142 - Elementary Spanish II
- FLS:241 - Intermediate Spanish I
- FLS:242 - Intermediate Spanish II
- When transferring to Iowa, present a cumulative transfer grade-point average (GPA) of at least 2.00 from all colleges attended.
University of Iowa Checkpoints
- Take the Spanish placement exam and place into SPAN 2000 level coursework. (i.e. place out of SPAN:1502 Intermediate Spanish II.)
- Complete at least two 2000 level SPAN courses taught in Spanish (6-8 semester hours) during the first semester of enrollment at The University of Iowa.
- Complete the UI courses required for this major and maintain a 2.00 Major and University of Iowa grade-point average.
- Complete at least half of the remaining semester hours needed for your major and degree during each of your two years at Iowa. (A total of 30-34 semester hours is required for the Spanish major and 120 semester hours for the BA degree.)
