Join Dr. Colleen Bringman for an hands-on and interactive design thinking workshop where you’ll work to design and build a prototype using everyday materials. Along the way, you’ll learn how engineers approach challenges, collaborate with others, and turn creative ideas into real solutions. Experience engineering the way it’s taught and practiced at Iowa. No prior experience needed — just curiosity and creativity. Available in Block 1 and Block 2.

Explore how environmental engineers protect public health and the planet through hands‑on experimentation in this interactive session led by Dr. Craig Just. You’ll rotate through engaging activities including producing electricity with microbes, turning river water into drinking water, and growing revolving algal biofilms used in wastewater treatment. This workshop blends engineering, biology, and chemistry and is perfect for students curious about sustainability, environmental solutions, and real‑world impact — no prior engineering experience required. Available in Block 1 and Block 2.

In this session, we will walk you through the process of applying for scholarships at the campus and national levels by tracing the paths of three recent scholars. As we follow our students' trajectories from their first day on campus to the present moment, we will learn more about how what came before, during, and after the application process shaped where they are today. Available only in Block 1.

Humans have used and misused drugs for thousands of years. Drugs have played a role in religious, cultural, and social experiences throughout time. We also will explore drugs use and culture in decades from 1880s through present day including war on drugs and the social programs to combat addictions in America. Example topics may include psychedelic drugs and the CIA and the counterculture movement, marijuana and jazz music, and the exploration of stoner cinema. The War on Drugs and other social programs to combat substance use will also be discussed as well is the impact on American Culture. Available in Block 1 and Block 2.

Led by Kate Karacay, senior academic advisor and coordinator of prehealth studies, we will explore the skills, values, and mindsets that are important in healthcare professions and how to find and cultivate experiences that set students up for academic and personal success. In this session, faculty will guide students and families through an experience that represents this active educational approach: “Finding Your Voice and Purpose in Podcasting” – an interactive workshop where they develop a sports podcast concept reflecting their passions and perspectives – followed by a visit to the SRM program’s new podcasting studio to see how these ideas translate into practice. Faculty will also answer general questions about the SRM program and highlight the career possibilities in sport and recreation. Available in Block 1 and Block 2.
