Linguistics Transfer Tips
Students can earn a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Linguistics or a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Linguistics (Teaching English as a Second Language) at the University of Iowa.
The Linguistics major can be sequenced in four semesters. Students may transfer either sophomore or junior year and still complete the major. The Linguistics (Teaching English as a Second Language) major can be sequenced four or six semesters—depending on the year that you begin your coursework at the University of Iowa.
To ensure that you can complete the Linguistics (Teaching English as a Second Language) major, students should transfer to UI after their sophomore year or consult with the Linguistics academic advisor to see if it is possible to complete the Linguistics (Teaching English as a Second Language) major in 4 semesters based on your anticipated start date at the University of Iowa.
Students who plan to complete their AA degree at an Iowa Community college and major in Linguistics should consider the 2 Plus 2 Guaranteed Graduation Plan.
Use the 2 Plus 2 website and the Online Equivalency Guide to determine appropriate transfer course equivalencies. Transfer students with an AA degree from an Iowa or Illinois community college will enter the university having fulfilled all of the General Education CORE Program requirements (except World Language and Understanding Cultural Perspectives) in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
2 Plus 2 students must complete the world language requirement as needed for Iowa's General Education Program through one of the following three pathways:
- Fourth Level of a single world language
- Third Level Plus a World Language and Cultural Exploration Course
- Second Level of Two Languages
Prospective transfer students should contact the University of Iowa Office of Admissions, 1-319-335-1566, for information about applying.
Prospective Linguistics majors should contact Meredith Mahy Gall at meredith-gall@uiowa.edu or 1-319-467-0337 with questions about the major.
