First-year students interested in a business major apply to the Tippie College of Business.

Direct Admission to Business

Direct admission is designed for high school students applying to the University as first-year students with an ACT composite score of 26 or higher (or a combined SAT EBRW+M 1240*/CR+M 1170** or higher) and a high school grade-point average (GPA) of 3.60 or higher. Applicants who do not meet this criteria but present strong academic records will be carefully considered. First-year applicants who satisfy the admission criteria for the University of Iowa but who are not admitted to the Tippie College of Business as a direct admit may petition for direct admission beginning October 1. Direct admission is for fall or summer only. Admission Requirements

Many students apply to the Tippie College of Business typically during their sophomore year through the Standard Admission option. UI students will need to meet these criteria to be considered for standard admission to Tippie College of Business for Fall 2020 and beyond: 

  • 24 semester hours of college credit (from UI or transfer credit)
  • No instances of academic misconduct
  • A GPA of at least 2.75 prerequisite, UI, and cumulative (accounting requires a 3.0 UI and cumulative GPA)
  • Passing grades in the following prerequisites or equivalents:
    • ECON:1100 Principles of Microeconomics
    • STAT:1030 Statistics for Business
    • RHET:1030 Rhetoric
    • MSCI:1500 Business Computing Essentials
    • MATH:1350 Quantitive Reasoning for Business (Note: We will also accept any course that currently fulfills MATH:1380.)

Undergraduate Areas of Study in the Tippie College of Business

The Tippie College of Business offers six majors leading to the undergraduate Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree.

General Education Program

Students admitted to the Tippie College of Business must complete the college's General Education Program in addition to the course work required for their major. The General Education Program is designed to provide all students with a foundation in critical thinking, reading, and writing. Be sure to talk to your academic adviser about these requirements.
