"I chose the University of Iowa because of its nationally recognized writing programs, but I stayed because of the incredible sense of community I found on campus. Even as an out-of-state student, she quickly built meaningful connections through multiple communities and organizations."
Ever since she was young, Ellie knew she wanted to be a writer. Surrounded by books and stories throughout her childhood, pursuing English, Creative Writing, and Screenwriting felt like a natural path toward her dream career.
One of her favorite classes was Topics in Screenwriting, where she spent an entire semester writing and workshopping a television pilot. The opportunity to focus deeply on one project helped her grow as a writer and storyteller.
Ellie serves as Editor-in-Chief of Broken Clock Literary Magazine, works as a fiction editor for earthwords Magazine, serves as an English Department ambassador, participates in the Honors Program, and is involved with Sigma Tau Delta and Phi Eta Sigma. She has also worked on student films and studied abroad in Dublin, Ireland.
Among her favorite memories are Hawkeye football game days and participating in the Wave at Kinnick Stadium. The excitement and community spirit on display every Saturday make those experiences unforgettable.
One of the most memorable opportunities connected to her major was studying literature and writing in Dublin, Ireland. Reading Irish literature while living in a UNESCO City of Literature gave her a unique perspective on creativity and storytelling.
Ellie's advice is to get involved early. Whether through clubs, research, study abroad, or simply meeting new people, putting yourself out there is the best way to find your community.
