Her lifelong fascination with how the Earth formed and changed over time led her to pursue Earth and Planetary Science. She loves studying the natural processes that shaped our planet long before humans existed.
One of her favorite classes has been Sedimentary Geology with Dr. Kate Tierney. She enjoys learning how rock formations can reveal details about Earth's history and ancient environments.
Mattie is involved in the Earth and Environmental Science Club and the Environmental Coalition. These organizations have helped her connect with other students who share similar interests while also introducing her to professionals outside the university.
A standout experience connected to her field of study was spending four days camping in the Badlands with professors and fellow students. The trip allowed her to explore geology firsthand while building strong connections within her department.
Mattie's advice is to treat school like a full-time job. Staying productive during the day allows for more free time in the evenings and helps maintain a healthy balance between academics and personal life.
