"It always felt like home, and I knew during my campus visit that I was meant to be a Hawkeye!"
Audrey chose to pursue special education after her experiences working in a special education classroom and being a member of Best Buddies in high school. These opportunities ignited her passion for advocating for students with disabilities and addressing all students' needs. She aims to instill a love of lifelong learning in her future students and create a safe, welcoming space in her classroom.
Her favorite major-specific classes have been EDTL:4900 Foundations of Special Education and EDTL:3174 Elementary Math Practicum. Coming to college as an open major, Audrey sought a school with diverse majors and opportunities to explore her options freely. She was drawn to the University of Iowa's proximity to downtown, with its 15+ coffee shops just a short walk away.
Audrey's most memorable experience was her first day living in the residence halls, where she met many new people, especially on her Honors floor. These connections have led to lasting friendships throughout her senior year. Her elementary school practicum stands out as a significant experience, allowing her to teach before formal student teaching and learn valuable lessons from her students.
Her biggest piece of advice to incoming students is to get involved. "Try out different student organizations and campus events," she says. "You'll meet so many people and find your community here at Iowa. Also, don't hesitate to talk to anyone and everyone! I was nervous about reaching out, but most people are in the same boat, wanting to make new friends too!"
