"For me, it really was the campus itself that drew me in. I think having the downtown area right next to campus is super special, and as someone who doesn't have a car, it has made it easy to purchase any necessities I need throughout the week, as well as to provide entertainment through movies, arcade games, and live music."
She originally arrived as an open major but discovered interests in history and political science through her coursework. Exploring those subjects eventually led her toward a career in education, where she could combine her love of learning with meaningful service.
One of her favorite courses has been France Under Nazi Occupation (1940–1944), which explored World War II history through politics, culture, and film.
One of her favorite Iowa memories was attending her first Hawkeye football game. The energy and excitement of game day helped her immediately feel part of the Hawkeye community.
Her experiences within the classroom have given her a greater appreciation for the variety of perspectives and opportunities available through education.
Makenzie's advice is to embrace new experiences. Whether it's joining a club, trying a different class, or meeting new people, stepping outside your comfort zone can lead to tremendous personal growth.
