Jillian has always had a passion for working with individuals with disabilities, an interest she developed while working with the Special Olympics. Her love for helping and connecting with people drew her to the field of occupational therapy. "Occupational therapy allows me to help individuals regain their independence and get back to doing the things they need to do daily, as well as the things they’re passionate about."

Her decision to attend the University of Iowa was strongly influenced by the campus atmosphere. "The campus was alive with energy—people walking, running, biking, playing pick-up volleyball, and, most importantly, smiling." The supportive environment and the care that professors show for their students were key factors in solidifying her choice.

One of her favorite organizations is Unified Sports, where individuals with and without disabilities come together to form teams and play intramural sports. "I've met the most genuine and kind individuals through Unified Sports, and I know they will be a part of my life for a long time." Jillian also volunteers in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) as a Child Life Volunteer, finding it rewarding to give back to the community right on campus.

Her most memorable experiences at Iowa often revolve around the people she’s met. "Everyone has their own unique story, and I’ve loved getting to know them." Another standout experience for her was a service-learning project in her Interpretation of Literature class, where she visited a local elementary school and talked with students about college and life.

Her advice to incoming students is to take advantage of all the opportunities the campus offers. "Don’t be afraid to say yes to things that might push you out of your comfort zone, but also don’t hesitate to seek out new opportunities on your own."
